Farmers' & Merchants' Savings Institution, Lynchburg

50¢ Farmers’ & Merchants’ Savings Institution of Lynchburg Certificate of Deposit, 183_ , Remainder, PMG Choice Uncirculated 63

The Institution was chartered by the General Assembly in 1843 with the wrong name (Farmers & Mechanics….). This was changed in 1844 to the correct name. This information creates a problem because the certificate has an 183_ date and appears to be falsely filled in. This certificate was printed using “Tanner’s Stereo Graph” process that was popular in the 1830s and 1840s. It is, of course, possible that the savings institution had this certificate printed for use before it opted to obtain a state charter. In any case, it is rare, with Jones-Littlefield suggesting a surviving population of 2-4 examples.
