Newport Bank

1863

This is a handsome note with a large center vignette of an early steam-powered warship at center flanked by an oval cameo head medallion FIVE counter at left (whose excellent three dimensional effect proves this note’s genuineness) and a vignette of the Ocean House in Newport, a hotel originally opened in 1844 and destroyed by fire in 1845, at right. The vignette is presumably of the replacement which was also destroyed by fire in 1898. The Newport Bank was incorporated in 1803 and remained in business until becoming the Newport National Bank (charter 1492) in 1865.
