The bank opened in 1836, chartered by the Michigan legislature, and failed in mid-1840, when the Ohio bank commissioners shut it down. Manhattan was located in the so-called “Toledo Strip,” a disputed piece of land that almost brought the two states to a shooting war and resulted in Ohio getting the disputed territory and Michigan being awarded the present day Upper Peninsula.
