(Tiffany Commission Scrip)

S.W. Halls, 103 River Street, Troy

1870s

Operating under the banner of Hall’s Rensselaer Fancy Dyeing Establishment, S.W. Hall was prepared to dye most anything a customer could think of as well as cleaning and pressing. Tiffany Commission Scrip was introduced by merchants across the nation to stimulate cash sales by offering a discount on those transactions during the turbulent days of the Panic of 1873. The face of the note features a bucolic canal scene while the back offers details about the firm and its offerings (including the fact that it was across the street from the Manufacturers National Bank of Troy) and redemption rules.
