The Ocean Bank of the City of New York

1850s

PMG Choice Uncirculated 63, Proof
The bank was organized in 1849 and remained in business until it was succeeded by the Ocean National Bank of the City of New York in 1865. The design features sailors looking out to sea beside a huge X at left and the bank’s trademark Neptune vignette at center. None of the usual POCs in the signature lines are punched completely through. Some sources say the population of surviving proofs of this design is around three notes.
