Distinctive Wellstood engraving techniques yields unique looking vignettes. Seated Neptune at top center is used for this bank as well as an American Indian warrior at the upper right.

Many of these $100 Proofs from the Art Davidson Collection are unique and this is no exception. It also has a long pedigree and goes back to the Thomas Morris engraving estate which was sold by Bill Donlon in 1974. John Ford bought this bank’s proof sheets there and they were sold later in the numbered Ford series. After Ford, it resided in the Mayer proof note cabinet for many years, and then realized $5,875 in the second Peter Mayer sale.
