Manufacturers & Traders Bank, Buffalo

1850s

The bank was organized in 1856 and remained in business until 1902 when it was succeeded by the Manufacturers and Traders National Bank of Buffalo. The $2 design features a large shipyard scene at center flanked by the bank department die at left and a large red-brown and white 2 protector. The note has an intricate dark red-brown ornamental overall tint, the aforementioned protector, and a large red-brown and white TWO protector over the signature lines. This note and another example appeared as part of an uncut sheet that was Lot 1101 in the 1990 ABNCo Archive sale. There are no known reports of any public auction appearances by examples of this design, other than the original two notes, and it is believed that these two notes are the only extant examples known.
