$20 Proof

Black River Bank, Watertown

1850

The bank was organized in 1844 and remained in business until 1864 when it was absorbed by the First National Bank of Watertown. The $20 design features a nearly panoramic vignette with Science, Agriculture (Ceres), and Navigation seated above the state comptroller die. The left end of the vignette depicts a train crossing a distant bridge while the right end features sailing vessels with the shore in the distance. There were five examples of this design in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, some examples having impairments. This example is free of any of those problems.
