$9

Bank of Cape Fear, Asheville

1850s

PMG Choice Fine 15
This Asheville issued $9 is engraved and printed by Bald, Cousland & Co., Philadelphia. Full red lace tint covers most of the note, with a large white”9″ outlined in red at the center. At top center, a paddlewheel steamer plies heavy seas with her flag flying in the wind. At the left, a perpendicular NINE is on intricate lathe work. At the right are “9” and “IX” dies. With honest circulation only and some partially folded-over edges. Serial number 4. Graded fairly by PMG, and a perfect representative of this fascinating odd-denomination series. Very scarce in this condition.
From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
