A 19th century Manx lifeboat rows to the aid of a ship in distress. A portrait of Sir William Hillary is inset. The lifeboat movement had its beginnings in the Isle of Man. Sir William Hillary founded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the world’s premier life-saving organization for shipwrecked mariners, and in 1832 he built the tower of Refuge which is a prominent landmark in Douglas Bay.
