$500 Proof

Metacomet Bank, Fall River

1850s

PMG Choice Uncirculated 64, Proof
The bank was organized in 1853 and remained in business until 1865 when it became the Metacomet National Bank. The $500 design has a very unusual vignette of an Native American family in a canoe in the surf preparing to spear a shark. There is also an oval portrait of Jefferson Borden, the bank’s first President. There were three examples of this spectacular high denomination Proof in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. There are not many of these to go around.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part III
( Same shark vignette as previous note )
