$500 Proof

Metacomet Bank, Fall River

1850s

The bank was organized in 1853 and remained in business until 1865 when it became the Metacomet National Bank. The $500 design has a very unusual vignette of an Native American family in a canoe in the surf preparing to spear a shark. There is also an oval portrait of Jefferson Borden, the bank’s first President. There were three examples of this spectacular high denomination Proof in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale – not enough to go around.
Formerly of the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part III
( Same shark vignette as previous note )
