Bank of Commerce, Fernandina

1861

$5 Bank of Commerce, Fernandina, 18__ , Remainder PMG Extremely Fine 40
The bank was organized in early 1861 but never opened; only having notes printed but not issued. Many sheets were used to serve as paper stock for the state’s 1863 fractional notes, but the sheet from which this note came did not suffer that fate. The attractive red and black note features the state comptroller die flanked by a vignette of a sailboat at left and a portrait of John C. Calhoun at right. This example served as the plate note on page 69 of Benice’s 2008 Florida catalog.
