Patriotic Bank of Washington

1830s-40s

Washington, DC- Patriotic Bank of Washington $5 18__ G34 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. The Patriotic Bank was a rarity in the world of DC banks in that it operated successfully for nearly half a century between 1815 and 1865. This note is a typical Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty creation with a degree of symmetry from left to right and several medallion heads (which were difficult to replicate by counterfeiters). A vignette of two sailing ships appears at right. The note is printed on India paper and has cut-out areas in the signature lines. There were three examples of this design in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale (Lot 212).
