Commercial Bank, Washington City

1850s

PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ, Proof
Another of the District’s fraudulent institutions, this bank was reportedly in business for a brief period of time between 1852 and 1855. The note features a large rendition of the New Jersey coat of arms at center flanked by an oval portrait of Henry Clay and a vignette of a sailing vessel. A large gray ONE protector and tiny maritime vignette at bottom center complete the design. This note is probably one of three examples of the design that appeared in Lot 193 of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. We do not expect there to be many more, if any, examples in Proof form out there.
