The reverse features a palm tree standing on the coast, in the background a three-masted bark under full sail and a radiant rising sun, and above a flying dove with a scroll in its beak, proclaiming liberty and peace. The design was inspired by the nation’s coat-of-arms including a plow at the foot of the palm tree and the legend THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, which is the motto in the coat-of-arms. The edge inscription O.A.U. JULY 1979 on the 1-, 2- and 5-cent coins dated 1979 marks the summit conference of the Organization of African Unity held in that year in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital.
